MAY DAY 2025: Protecting Workers’ Rights In The Era Of Digitalization And AI

KOLASE MAY DAY & PETI-min

MTI MEDAN – This year’s May Day commemoration serves as a call for the world to pay closer attention to workers’ rights and welfare in the midst of Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The Chairman of KSPSI AGN North Sumatra (Sumut), Tengku Muhammad Yusuf, revealed that the presence of AI has transformed the world of work at an extraordinary speed, but not without its darker sides, such as exploitation through algorithmic management, unrealistic productivity targets, and constant worker surveillance.

He reminded that the implementation of technology without consultation with workers and their unions could result in serious consequences, as has happened in various parts of the world:

*In the Philippines, Jasper Dalman, a 19-year-old delivery rider working for Foodpanda, tragically lost his life. His union, RIDERS-SENTRO, eventually won recognition and insurance rights after his death highlighted the deadly consequences of algorithmic exploitation that imposed impossible productivity targets.

*In Turkey, TikTok content moderators employed by Telus were dismissed for protesting against inhumane AI-managed workloads and trauma-inducing content.

*In the United States, nurses working through platforms face AI-controlled shift applications, which bypass worker protections and create dangerous conditions for both them and their patients.

The Chairman of KSPSI AGN North Sumatra emphasized that technology application must prioritize safety, fairness, and worker dignity by involving trade unions in the planning process. Through this, the use of AI can be designed for collective benefit rather than being used against workers.

The ITUC emphasizes the importance of:

*Full involvement of trade unions in the design and implementation of AI.

*Transparent, human-centered technology that upholds rights and safety.

*A binding ILO Convention on platform work to protect all workers in the digital economy.

On this May Day, we remember those who have perished and continue to fight for those who are still enduring. Technology should be a tool for progress, not a weapon for exploitation.

**NOTES: Enlightenment for Public Understanding of AI**

*AI or Artificial Intelligence is a technology designed to enhance productivity and innovation. However, it is crucial to understand that AI is merely a tool that works according to how it is applied by humans. The positive or negative impact caused by AI largely depends on the policies and decisions made by employers, regulators, and technology users. Therefore, instead of blaming technology, it is important to collectively push for equitable, humane, and respectful application of AI that honors workers’ rights. Let us join hands to ensure that technology works for the collective good.

*AI technology has great potential to enhance efficiency, but its use can also bring negative impacts if not implemented wisely. It is important to remember that technology is merely a tool—its use and implementation depend on the decisions made by employers and those responsible. Open dialogue and the involvement of all parties are the keys to creating a fair, safe, and dignified work environment for all.

*The era of Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence (AI) brings many potentials but also significant challenges for workers. It is crucial for society to understand that technology is merely a tool, and its use depends on the decisions made by employers and authorities. With open dialogue and the involvement of all parties, we can create a work environment that is more fair, safe, and dignified for everyone.
